We provide vital treatment, care & support to cancer patients and families in Wales

Story

Hi,

In 2013 I organised a charity cycle ride across Wales in aid of Velindre Cancer Centre in Wales, following the sad loss of my mother in 2012 to this cruel disease.  I was joined by a number of other keen cyclists and together we raised nearly £15,000.00 - far beyond our expecations, but reflective of the kind and generous donations of those who supported us!

So this year I am organising a 50 mile (medio fondo) and 100 mile (Gran Fondo) event on Saturday 28th June, starting and finishing in Cardiff as part fundraising for Velindre Cancer Centre. Then in September I will be taking part in the 515km East Coast Ride from Boston to New York. My target for both events is to raise £5,000.

Velindre Cancer Centre is the largest non – surgical cancer Hospital in Wales providing Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy and other specialised anti – cancer treatments for over half the people of Wales.

They have been providing support and care to cancer patients in South Wales for over 50 years. On average every year Velindre Cancer Centre provides care, treatment and support for over 130,000 out patients and day cases.

Facing up to, and dealing with cancer is one of the biggest challenges that anyone can face; it affects everyone - family, friends, work colleagues and ultimately how you live your life. It can be a very frightening time. At Velindre they strive to support cancer patients and their families through this difficult period, and their  specially trained and highly committed staff strive every day to make this time as comfortable as possible.

They believe that every hour, every day, every month that someone survives cancer is a victory. So they have launched a campaign to highlight this positive message - Velindre Victory over Cancer.

Every pound that is raised will be used to help them in the battle to achieve the ultimate goal. Every event, every function no matter how small, will be a celebration because anything that helps defy cancer will contribute towards the aim of Victory over Cancer.

Andrea Hague, Director of Velindre Cancer Centre said “Patient Centred care is at the heart of everything we do and believe in here at Velindre; all money raised from our Victory over Cancer campaign will be used to ensure the best possible support is offered to every patient, their families and carers dealing with cancer. It will allow us to fund ground breaking research, specialist equipment, and new developments so our staff have access to the most up to date training and techniques available.”

Someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer every 2 minutes. It is estimated that by 2015 there will be a 30% increase in the most common forms of cancer.

However already more people in Wales are surviving cancer because of early detection and better treatments.
