Newcastle SolidariTee 555 Izmir to Dubrovnik Challenge · 27 January 2021

We support NGOs providing legal aid to refugees in Greece. The asylum process is very complex, so legal aid is vital in enabling asylum seekers to navigate this. We support individuals in reuniting with families and gaining refugee status, allowing them to begin fulfilling lives in new countries.

Story

The Newcastle University branch of SolidariTee are running, walking and cycling the distance between Izmir, Turkey and Dubrovnik, Croatia. We are doing this challenge over the first week of February- SolidariTee’s week of action. This distance represents a part of the journey of a refugee. We stand in solidarity with all refugees and asylum seekers and hope to raise as much as we can to support them.

We are a large team so please feel free to shout out whoever in our team you are supporting!! Thank you so much.

SolidariTee is the largest entirely student-run charity supporting the international assistance of refugees and asylum seekers.

The makeshift refugee camps scattered around Europe are severely over-crowded and dangerous. Refugees arriving in Greece today will have to live in these inhumane conditions until 2022 for an interview which examines their right to claim asylum. Legal aid is so under-funded that thousands of refugees enter this highly complex legal process without any guidance. This results in a high rate of deportations, many of which are unjustified.
