The Byrne Family Foundation has been set up to support those less fortunate than ourselves and impact the lives of those in desperate need – in our own communities and overseas.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Denise Saunders, Kerry Dowling and Helen Anderson are going to run, yes, RUN 5km (3.1 miles) on Saturday 22nd June 2013 to help raise money for Harvey who's 3 years old and was born with Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy. This means that he's unable to walk and struggles to get around. The money will be used to pay for an operation and physiotherapy to allow Harvey to walk more easily and without pain.

Harvey needs an operation called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR), which cuts the nerves at the bottom of his spine, removing the spasticity in his legs permanently. That's just the start though as he'll need 2 or more years of physiotherapy to fully exploit SDR. This will hopefully allow Harvey to walk although it is very unlikely to allow him to walk long distances or run.

Although the operation is available on the NHS, many applications are rejected and there are no guarantees that Harvey would be accepted. Also, it can take over 18 months from referral to the decision being made. Therefore, Harvey's mum and dad intend to take him to St Louis, Missouri, USA, which is the world’s leading hospital for this operation, with over 2500 successful operations. However, this operation is expensive, costing around £50,000 to have this operation and the associated physiotherapy.

We have therefore decided to help raise funds for the operation and associated physiotherapy and would be very grateful for any donations you can make big or small.

As non-runners , running 5km is going to be a challenge, a BIG challenge(!!) and we do intend to RUN ALL THE WAY!!!

We've decided to run at Netley Abbey parkrun which is an organised event (with a measured 5km course) on Saturday 22nd June and we'd love for you to come and support us on the day. In fact, why not come and run with us?! Find out more info at http://www.parkrun.org.uk/netleyabbey/
