After volunteering for Crisis at Christmas in 2015, I felt so humbled and touched by how grateful and appreciative the homeless visitors were, that I just had to volunteer again this year.

I personally find myself very fortunate to have a roof over my head, food and water in abundance amongst other such luxuries that these homeless visitors cannot enjoy. For whatever reason the visitors are homeless, I believe that we should help those most in need in our society to ensure we build a cohesive community and world.

My role will be to befriend and chat with the homeless visitors, serve food, clean the dining tables, the accommodation of the shelter and to ensure all visitors have access to all the services and food they desire.

A few facts about homelessness in England;

114,790 households applied to their local authority for homelessness assistance in 2015/16, an 11 per cent rise since 2010/11.

57,750 households were accepted as homeless and in 'priority need' - a six per cent rise on 2014/15.

When most people think of a homeless person they tend to think of someone sleeping rough on the streets. Sleeping rough is a dangerous and traumatising experience. Many people who sleep rough will suffer from multiple health conditions, such as mental health problems and drug misuse they are also in greater danger of violence than the general population.
