Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On May 3rd 2022 i start a 1249 mile adventure from Lizard Point in Cornwall, England to Cape Wrath in Sutherland. Scotland. I have taken 12 weeks off work and hope to complete the walk in 80 days. I will be backpacking the route and sleeping wherever i can.
I believe that the time to do the things you want to do is now. This walk feels like it’s something I just have to do. It has been in my thoughts for three years and I feel incredibly grateful to be in good health and to have the opportunity to go on an adventure like this.
After putting it off for to long, in 2021 my uncle retired. In the week after his retirement he was diagnosed with leukemia. He spent the majority of 2021 and 2022 receiving treatment, the majority spent in isolation in hospital, away from family and friends whilst patiently hoping to find a suitable match for stem cell transplant.
In the UK, only 2% of the population are registered donors and tragically 4 in 10 of those diagnosed with blood cancer are unsuccessful in receiving a stem cell match. So, of the 68,500,000 people in the UK, only 1,370,000 are actual registered donors. This needs to increase. I mean, what a feeling it must be to know that you have the potential opportunity to save someones life!
Thankfully, earlier this year, my uncle was successfully matched and is now in the early stages of remission. Hopefully he will be able to go on and make a full recovery and live the happy retirement that he deserves. This was possible due to the wonderful human who became a donor.
So, as much as i am attempting this adventure because it is something i want to do, another motivating reason is to raise awareness of leukemia. I am aiming to raise £1249 to help DKMS with their fight against leukemia and blood cancer. Please become a registered donor with DKMS and help save a life. If possible, please donate what you can. Not only will it go to a worthy cause but it will also help motivate me along the trail. I am pretty sure i am going to need it 🤕.
Thank You so much for your support. It really does mean the world.
Abe
