'Oh Alaina.. you've put yourself through this once, what have you got to go and do it again for?!'

If my mum was able to talk to me now, I guarantee she would be saying something along these lines!

Unfortunately however, she can't; and that is the exact reason why I am putting myself through 26.2 miles of craziness, to raise awareness of sarcoma as a cancer and to help those who are facing a sarcoma diagnosis to have a brighter future through advanced research and treatment.

Sarcoma is a cancer of the bone and soft tissue. It is one of the hardest to diagnose and difficult to treat. Mum had a very short but brave battle with her diagnosis, just five weeks. In those five weeks, she continued to prove to be the strongest and most selfless woman I will ever know and still inspires me everyday.

She was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma in mid-2016, at which point neither of us had even heard of sarcoma. Within 24 hours, the news was then broken to us that it was terminal and the palliative treatments available would not include chemotherapy as the cancer was too advanced. There would be little or no results from chemotherapy and the likely side-effects this could produce reduce the best quality of life possible at this stage.

After spending countless hours researching into anything and everything and how I could cure her single-handedly, I realised that my research informed me more research was needed. So this is how I would now like to contribute to those individuals and families who may be in the same position in the future, with fundraising so they don't have to research. To fundraise so they are able to have many more weeks, months and years of health.
