Alex Booker is raising money for Standing Voice
Story
Standing Voice is an international non-governmental organisation based in Tanzania, with its headquarters in the United Kingdom. We create programmes for the disempowered to speak back to their societies and reassert their presence and equality.
I know the money I raise will make a difference – it will directly support Standing Voice's life-saving work: from fighting the skin cancer epidemic, to giving every child with albinism a fair chance at education.

For the past few years I have had the privilege of travelling to Ukerewe, an Island on Lake Victoria in Tanzania, with a group of international volunteers to help deliver the Summer Skills Workshops and renovate parts of the Umoja - this year Simon and I worked with local carpenters to build the library. My time was also spent running a series of printmaking workshops to groups of children and adults, all learning and bringing a wealth of talent, fun and fantastic works to an exhibition at the end of the week. Truly inspiring scenes!
The albinism community on the island has suffered greatly from a history of discrimination, ignorance and violence. Meeting these courageous individuals has had a profound effect and inspired me countless times not only in my personal life but also to help in any future projects with the charity. The incredible friends I've made on these trips, have highlighted the need and necessity for change with the support and pioneering work of Standing Voice.
The centre was built by Standing Voice in 2016 to provide skills development and economic enrichment for people with albinism and the wider community.
This run will be my second long distance challenge, a modest effort compared to the daily challenges that people living with albinism face in Africa.
