Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

About me:

I have been a police officer in Manchester for 21 years. If it wasn’t for the Police Treatment Centres I sincerely doubt that I would be a fully operational officer, if a police officer  at all. Over the years they have helped me overcome many issues through treatment including-

  • Broken back
  • Broken leg
  • Broken shoulder
  • Torn bicep/rotator cuff
  • Stress
  • Depression

Despite metalwork in various parts of my body and being told by the surgeon after my leg rebuild I’d never be able to run, I am now a keen cyclist and runner. That I am able to do that is thanks to the Police Treatment Centre at Harrogate.

I have entered Ironman UK Triathlon in Bolton on 15th July 2018 which comprises the following-

  • 2.5 mile Swim
  • 112 mile Cycle
  • 26.2 mile Run (well, a marathon!)
Details here- http://m.eu.ironman.com/triathlon/events/emea/ironman/uk.aspx

I was initially going to attempt the event just for me, to show myself what I can do when I put my mind to it despite all the injuries/metalwork and to hopefully inspire my kids. However, over time I thought it selfish to keep it quiet as there was the opportunity to raise money for the organisation that has made it possible for me to actively play with my kids; run, cycle, swim, and cope better with what life and the job throws at me. Hence I’ve set up this just giving page...

About the Police Treatment Centres-

http://www.thepolicetreatmentcentres.org

The Police Treatment Centres is the working title of registered charity, the Northern Police Convalescent and Treatment Centre. The charity commission registration number for England and Wales is 1147449 and Scotland, SCO43396. The charity was founded in 1898 by Catherine Gurney OBE.

The charity operates two centres (Castlebrae in Auchterarder, Perthshire and St Andrews in Harrogate, North Yorkshire) where serving and retired officers can receive treatment following an injury or illness to aid their return to better health and speed up their return to work.

What we do:
Patients receive treatment on a mostly residential basis. We provide intensive treatment which is holistic and can include: intensive physio; fitness and strength classes; workshops on issues such as sleep and coping with stress; and recuperative and complementary therapies.

Who we help:
We provide our services to forces in the North of England, North Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
We treat about 4000 patients every year between the two centres.

About 80% of these people attend with injuries and receive physiotherapy.

How we are funded:

It costs about £3.7 million each year to provide our services.

Approximately 85% of this funding is provided by serving officers who make a weekly donation from their pay.

The remainder of our funding comes from our Charity Lottery, Hospitality, investment

income, donations from members of the public, legacies and so on.
