Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am a type 1 diabetic of 14 years, and have often relied on Diabetes UK for mental and physical health support. For 14 of those years I believed that it didn’t matter how I lived my life, that I was destined to be ill and die young so It didn’t matter if I smoked, ate fast food once or twice a day and avoided checking blood sugar levels. I believed that I could continue living my life as if I was never diagnosed, numbing myself to the reality of my condition through inebriation and avoidance.
In January 2021 there was a trigger that made me realise I had to face reality and make a change. I was diagnosed with neuropathy in my right foot, ED and background retinopathy which can lead to blindness if left untreated. It was at this moment I realised the value of my life and making myself better, for me, my family and friends and my future!
I weighed 112KG when I started this Journey on January 20th, and have been dieting and exercising regularly for the first time in my life. Meanwhile I have been smoke free for 89 days and counting! and on April 18th I weighed in at 98KG! Running has been a huge part of this for me and I recently completed a 10km run for the first time which has inspired me to give something back and train for a half marathon of my city Portsmouth.
My plan is to run 14 miles around the whole of Portsea island on 4th September 2021. This date gives me the whole summer to train and prepare myself physically and mentally, while avoiding the event occurring on the bank holiday.
If anyone can donate to this brilliant charity and help me reach my target, I, along with millions of other diabetics would be so grateful.
