Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On 18 December 2007, our lives changed forever.  Our son, Jake, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 2 years old.

After 2 days in hospital and many blood tests, we came home.  But, this is a lifelong disease.

You cannot prevent it.  No-one is sure what causes it.  It has no age or sex preference.

Everyday is a battle.

We fight HIGH blood sugars. - They make Jake tired, lifeless and sick and can have long-term implications such as liver damage, loss of sight, loss of limbs.

We fight LOW blood sugars. - They make Jake vacant and floppy and can have short-term implications such as seizures and unconsciousness.

Diabetes does not go on holiday.

It does not sleep.

It does not stop for a hug.

It is a 24/7, 365 days a year disease.

There is currently NO CURE

There is just a life support system of:

 *   8 - 10 finger pricks and blood tests a day (3,000 a year)

 *   4 injections of insulin a day (1460 a year)

 *   many hospital and doctor visits

just to keep Jake alive.

Diabetes affects the whole family.

Diabetes affects around 25,000 children and their families.  Incidence is increasing by about 4% each year, with the largest increase in children under five.

Only research will find the cure.  Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) exists to fund that research and find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes and its complications.

We, as a family, are joining JDRF for a 5 mile WALK TO CURE DIABETES on Sunday 4 October.  Please help us to find a cure by giving generously.
