Ally Mackenzie is doing a sprint triathlon on September 15th in wet and windy Fleetwood (well that's what the reviews from every other year have said!) on behalf of the charity LightAware. Ally has to swim 400m, cycle 21 k and then run 5K. it's called a sprint triathlon because it is shorter than a usual triathlon.
So why is Ally doing this?
"I am hoping to raise some money for the charity Light Aware. Over the last few years through work and through friends I have met more and more people who are suffering terrible migraines for days at a time and other debilitating illness through constant exposure to LED & fluorescent lighting. This means these people are no longer able to do the things that we just take for granted like go shopping, go out for meals go on public transport or to doctor’s appointments or even to work as everywhere is now switching to LED lighting.
The charity LightAware has been set up by a group of people who have been affected or have partners who are affected by this condition and are working on a voluntary basis to try and raise awareness of this condition at a national level. You can find out more from their website Lightaware.org but I really wanted to raise some money as I think they are doing really valuable work on behalf of many people who are suffering"
Like many accessibility issues, attitude and understanding make a big difference. LightAware wants to enable access to civic life by encouraging service providers and businesses to become ‘LightAware’. LightAware believes no-one should have to experience pain and suffering just to light their homes and live their lives.
