Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am 19 years old, a time in my life when my appearance is particularly important to me. I have NEVER cut my hair, other than a very fine trim but on the 18th August 2018… I will be shaving off the lot. Some may call me brave and others may call be crazy but ultimately, I want to make this gesture in an effort to raise money for a phenomenal charity. A charity that deals with children, under 18, who live with life changing injuries every day. A charity that supported my brother Stephen throughout his life.

The Frenchay After Burns Children's Club (FAB Club) supports the rehabilitation and recovery of burn injured children in the South West of England. At just 22 months old, my brother was severely scalded which meant he had to wear a body stocking for the next three years to help him heal and ultimately left him with scars all over the upper half of his body for the rest of his life.
FAB club were there to support him with all that he needed, they supported his emotional needs and helped him accept his injuries, teaching him that if anything, his scars, made him more special.
FAB club were there through everything, supporting him not only as a small child but into adulthood, and particularly through his early teens when all any teens want to do is ‘fit in’.
Stephen was able to go away with FAB club on many trips, enjoying the company of people like himself, building confidence and self-esteem in them all; Something that is especially vital to burns survivors. Stephen was fortunate enough to be taken on fantastic trip to Africa. Stephen spoke often and affectionately about FAB club and I dread to think how our families’ life would have differed without this amazing charity.

Sadly, Stephen is no longer with us, but this is my chance to do something positive for him and thank FAB Club properly for all that they did for my brother and my family. FAB club is only made possible by money raised through fundraising events, donations, sponsorships and the generous work of the committed volunteers.

So, I am not ‘braving the shave’, in fact I am not brave by any comparison to the children who wake up every day looking different. I am one of the lucky ones in life and I will be donating my hair to The Little Princess Trust. This is another incredible charity that provides real hair wigs free of charge to children and young adults up to the age of 24, who have sadly lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other illnesses, including burns victims.

Please help me to support these life changing charities and by giving what you can. I will be having my hair cut and head shaved on the 18th August at The White Willow Pub, Bridgwater who have generously provided the venue. Of course, you are welcome if you are in the area!
