Story

Hey ocean lovers
Most of you know I have a huge passion for the ocean and being in the water, which has taken me on a wonderfully unique journey into the world of mermaiding . I recently entered the miss uk mermaid competition, yep this is real life. And to my surprise have been chosen to select my county in the finals with the potential of going to the miss uk international competition in 2020 which is currently being held in China this year.

For those of you who don't know me ,I am a mermaid, yoga teacher, surfer and freediver with a mission to reducing our plastic waste that gets dumped into our oceans and protecting the habitats that are affected by this.

If you don't know much about the impact this is having here are a few facts to state this crisis

FACT #1

About 8 million metric tons of plastic are thrown into the ocean annually. Of those, 236,000 tons are microplastics– tiny pieces of broken-down plastic smaller than your little fingernail

FACT #2

There are five massive patches of plastic in the oceans around the world. These huge concentrations of plastic debris cover large swaths of the ocean; the one between California and Hawaii is the size of the state of Texas

FACT #3

Every minute, one garbage truck of plastic is dumped into our oceans

FACT #4

The amount of plastic in the ocean is set to increase tenfold by 2020

FACT #5

By 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than there are fish (by weight)

FACT #6

Plastic is found in the ocean as far as 11km deep, meaning synthetic fibers have contaminated even the most remote places on Earth

FACT #7

Many marine organisms can’t distinguish common plastic items from food. Animals who eat plastic often starve because they can’t digest the plastic and it fills their stomachs, preventing them from eating real food

FACT #8

The likelihood of coral becoming diseased increases from 4% to 89% after coming in contact with marine plastic. It also damages the skin of coral, allowing infection. Coral reefs are home to more than 25% of marine life.

FACT #9

There is more plastic than natural prey at the sea surface of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which means that organisms feeding at this area are likely to have plastic as a major component of their diets. For instance, sea turtles by-caught in fisheries operating within and around the patch can have up to 74% (by dry weight) of their diets composed of ocean plastics.

FACT #10

Many fish humans consume, including brown trout, cisco, and perch, have at one time or another, ingested plastic microfibers.

It isn't easy to read but it does need to be spoken about and brought to our attention. That is why I am entering this competition.

This competition is a recognized freediving competition with a pagent twist. The competition consists of underwater breath holds dynamic swims underwater Photoshoots and the ability to swim with your legs strapped together in a mono fin and mermaid fabric tail.
I am entering this competition not as a pagent but to bring awareness to protecting our oceans and reducing our plastic waste. The competition is sponsored by seashepherduk.

Sea Shepherd UK is a registered marine conservation charity whose primary mission is to end the destruction of habitats and illegal killing of wildlife around the UK's coastline and across the world’s oceans in order to conserve and protect marine ecosystems and species.

Sea Shepherd UK uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities committed against marine wildlife

The mermaid world is increasingly growing, not only the magical aspect it has but the tranquility and freedom it gives you when learning to be comfortable underwater.
The link between yoga and freediving is where my heart lies, tapping into the power of the breath and learning how we can transition our nervous systems into such a state of deep rest that we are capable of achieving the unimaginable concept of holding our breath for long periods of time. This is all enduced by the power of pranayama ( breathing techniques) and when used underwater creates the same state as meditation, freeing us from thought, relieving stress, anxiety encorporating mantra meditation and yoga nidra to completely relax the mind and body to experience a whole new world beneath the surface.
I want everyone to experience this sensation. I want to help people gain confidence under water, face their fears to understand how incredibly intelligent the body is when we just let go,  relax and trust.
I want to teach people the power of the breath and how we can chemically change our bodies to achieve the unachievable and experience the complete freedom of mermaiding. But most importantly having fun.
As we get older our life seems to get harder. We loose the sense of our inner child, the ability to live in the moment, we loose touch of the magic in the world that we used to see.
This side of us is still there burried deep under the rubble of what we expect of ourselves as adults, how we should behave and what choices are acceptable.
With the stresses of life our inner child fades into the background, a distant memory of being free.
Im here to show you that no dream is too big, no idea is too crazy and your imagination is your biggest treasure in life.

Next summer I am launching the first ever yoga meditation freediving and mermaid camp in mallorca which is where I will share my techniques and the incredible link between water and yoga.
