Story

I am fundraising for Tonic Music for Mental Health. This wonderful charity aims to deliver good mental health and recovery through music.

In July, I was introduced to Tonic through a psychiatry event in Liverpool. I quickly realised that the work that they do aligns fully with my interests. Music and the arts have always played a vital role in supporting my mental wellbeing. I've been playing violin and viola throughout school and I have continued to stay involved in orchestras alongside studying Medicine.

My belief in the power of music and the creative arts on mental health was strengthened further when I had the opportunity to play my violin in psychiatric intensive care. There was this almost magical atmosphere where we were being transported by the music. Live music inspired dialogue between me, the patients, and the staff, and I felt we were able to make connections together. Because of the music, I felt that we created a strong sense of community which was extremely precious.

This is only a tiny snapshot of my experiences with music and wellbeing. But it's these experiences that inspire me to fundraise for Tonic, so they can continue to support individuals through music.

Why running?

During 2021, I decided to take up running again as a way to build up my physical strength. This was also a time where I was still navigating my own mental health difficulties. Back then, 2kms felt like a lot. But over time, I was able to extend my running distance to 10kms. Running is a way for me to step away from my computer, to be outside and feel the sun. It has also become a valuable way for me to sustain my mental wellbeing. 10 miles is a big step upwards, however I am ready to take on this challenge and I hope you will support me in this too.

Why donate to Tonic?

Tonic currently runs 2 programmes: Tonic Rider and Never Mind the Stigma.

Tonic Rider provides mental health support specifically for individuals working in the music industry. They run training courses, workshops, support groups, and 1-to-1sessions.

Never Mind the Stigma was a campaign created to promote awareness and encourage discussion around mental health. Through pop-up information stands at gigs, festivals, and events, this campaign aims to reduce the stigma around mental health.

By donating to Tonic, you can help keep Tonic services free, and where this is not possible, subsidise their courses. Mental health issues can affect anyone. However, your donation will help Tonic support individuals on their journeys towards recovery.

Thank you for taking the time to read this far, No donation is too small. All amounts, big or small are highly appreciated. I hope that you will support me, both in my training and on the day of the Great South Run in October☺️
