Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In the summer of 2009 my dear friend, Anders Nielsen, was diagnosed with cancer of the Oesophagus, a shattering blow for him, his family and friends. This marked the start of a long, hard battle for Anders fighting this most aggressive of cancers. In doing so, Anders demonstrated the same traits of resolve and determination that served him so well as a successful international and Olympic badminton player. Tragically, despite this resolve, some 12 months later Anders lost this battle having fought tenaciously right up until the end. He leaves behind a wife and 2 young children.

Anders spent the last few weeks of his life in the St Raphael Hospice in Cheam, Surrey. St Raphael was my first experience of a Hospice and a quite remarkable place it is too. The quality of care and support St Raphael delivered on all levels for Anders and those close to him is something I will never forget. Quite simply, nothing was too much trouble in ensuring optimal comfort and dignity for him over his last weeks. The doctors and nurses assigned to Anders’ care were very special individuals whose dedication and support knew no bounds.

Seeing someone close to you dying from a terminal illness is a truly harrowing experience. Along the way, one goes through a variety of different emotions. For me, the profound feeling of helplessness was particularly difficult to accept.

In short, I really want to do something to help St Raphael Hospice in memory of Anders and to express our heartfelt gratitude to them.

So,  on 2nd July,  I will be competing in La Marmotte in the French Alps. La Marmotte is considered to be the world’s toughest Cyclosportive racing event, attracting both Europe’s elite club riders and budding pros alike. The route includes some of the most gruelling climbs in the Alpine stage of the Tour de France, with 5000 metres of ascent, over a distance of 110 miles.

In participating in this event I am hoping that you will sponsor me, to help raise much needed funds for St Raphael Hospice.

Any contribution you are able to make, however small, is very much appreciated...

Thank you
