ActionAid is an international charity working with women and girls to create a more just, equitable and sustainable future. We work across the world with local communities, women's networks and other allies to support women and girls as they tackle injustices and claim their rights.

Story

UPDATE::

Since we have recently had good news from ActionAid that Iloshon School has been given funding from the local government to build the classrooms and toilet block, another school, just 6km away, has been found - Enkutuk Endikirr Primary School - which faces very similar challenges.

Enkutuk Endikirr was founded in 2007 and since then the number of pupils has grown to 208. There are only three teachers at the school, two of whom are employed by parents of children attending the school.

There are currently only two classroom buildings at the school, meaning most children are taught outdoors under the trees. We'll be building two new classrooms and a toilet block to help improve the learning environment for the children.

In Kenya, since the government rolled out its free primary education programme in 2003, there has been an increase in the number of pupils joining school. However, little has been done to improve infrastructure. The children of Ilushon Primary School, located in a rural settlement south of Nairobi, are studying in dire conditions. Severe overcrowding and lack of proper toilet facilities have resulted in a high drop-out rate and have adversely affected the quality of education the school is able to provide. The solution is simple, but requires an investment of time and money. I have pledged my time to Ilushon Primary, but several thousand dollars are needed for supplies and local contractors.

That's where you come in.

With the collaboration of ActionAid, I will spending a week in Kenya building two classrooms and a toilet block. In its current state of overcrowding, several different grades are taught together and the shortage of toilets means the children lose valuable teaching time to queuing. These challenges hamper the pupil's personal development and further exacerbate the cycle of poverty. These new facilities will help more children get a better education, but

I can only do it through the generosity of your donations.

Raising money for even the most worthwhile initiatives is always daunting, and this is a high bar, but I have been involved in charitable initiatives in London for the past 6 years. I've run volunteer days, bake sales, pub quizzes and holiday gift wrapping campaigns to raise awareness and support for local charities aimed at helping those in our community who are the most vulnerable. And you were always there, reaching into your pockets and taking time out of your busy lives to lend a hand.

Now, we're just taking it global and expanding our reach. Your pounds, dollars, euros will be supporting a community with a very urgent need. By donating to this challenge you can make an impact on the personal development and academic performance of a child living in a rural village with the click of your mouse.

Help disadvantaged children realise their potential. It's so easy. Just click Donate.
