We want to ensure that every patient at Addenbrooke's and the Rosie hospitals experiences the highest quality of care available. We raise funds for cutting edge technology, additional specialist staff and extra comforts for patients, over and above what is possible with NHS funding alone.

Story

Thanks for visiting, the following information is about where any donations will go and a brief outline of Andrew’s journey.

Donations in Andrew's memory, will help to support liver transplant
patients. It really is a meaningful way to remember him and will help make a real difference for future patients, as it did for Andrew.

Based in Addenbrooke's Hospital, part of Cambridge University Hospitals, the internationally acclaimed Cambridge Transplant Centre has become one of the largest transplant centres in the UK. They provide highly specialised care for patients with actual or suspected abdominal organ failure for much of the East of England and beyond.

In addition to more than 160 kidney transplants performed annually, the Addenbrooke’s transplant team also performs 20-30 combined kidney/pancreas transplants, 80 liver transplants, and an increasing number of intestinal and multi-organ transplants each year.

The donations will go towards the liver hepatology fund (fund 9354) and the liver perfusion fund (9766);

Liver perfusion fund (9766)

To increase the supply and quality of livers available for transplant at Addenbrooke’s, funds are needed and being raised to invest in a liver perfusion machine.This is state-of-the-art technology, for which much of the early-stage research was done in Cambridge. The machine is still in development now, and only being used in small trials in a handful of other countries. No other hospital in the UK has one. And yet what it would allow us to do is transformational.

 A liver perfusion machine pumps oxygenated blood through the liver, mimicking in simple terms what happens in the body. In this way, livers can be kept viable for significantly longer periods of time outside the body - up to 24 hours. In addition, the machine allows doctors to fully assess the liver and its function before transplantation. This has two main benefits: reducing failed transplants and significant post-transplant complications for the patient, and increasing the number of donor livers available for transplant by ensuring no livers are needlessly discarded.

Liver hepatology fund (9354): supports all work around liver, including but not restricted to transplantation.

Andrew was diagnosed with ESLD (End Stage Liver Disease) in September 2012.From that day forwards, he fought a hard battle, doing everything he was told to do and after initially being unable to go on the list for a liver transplant as he was too ill, he eventually got to a point where he did go onto the list and got his new liver in November 2014.

He did so well, and got to the point where he was able to enjoy a good quality of life. He still had quite a few occasions that required hospital admissions, mainly due to infections which, being on immunosuppressants, meant he was particularly prone to. Then in July 2017 he started to become jaundiced. He was admitted to Southampton Hospital who then transferred him up to Addenbrookes hospital where they did everything they could possibly do to help Andrew. Sadly, his body was rejecting the transplanted organ and
eventually he went into multiple organ failure before passing peacefully away on the 15th September 2017.

The care and support he received from Addenbrookes hospital liver unit
was outstanding and made such a huge difference to his life and to many other patients from all over.
