On October 11, 2004, my best friend from university, Nick Webber, was killed in a car accident in rural Malawi, where he had gone to offer legal aid to poor defendants who would otherwise not get a lawyer.
Nick was a lovely bloke, and had a brilliant mind. He finished second in the whole of Cambridge University in history the year we graduated and then topped his class at law school. Of all the law firms competing for his signature, he chose one that would let him take a year out in Africa to work with the neediest cases. This was classic Nick. We lost a great civil rights lawyer when he was killed.
His mother's speech at his funeral was the most courageous act I have ever witnessed. Soon after his death, she set up a charity in his memory, the Nick Webber Trust. Its mission has grown and now includes building schools, health clinics and a law library in Malawi. It's a fantastic cause and it needs your money.
Seven years ago I ran a five mile race for the trust and raised £800. This time I'm running a half marathon and aiming to raise £1,000. Running a half marathon has long been on my list of 1001 things to do before you turn forty, and this is my last chance. I hope my knees and ankles can take it.
