Brain Tumour Research is the leading voice of the brain tumour community and focused on finding a cure for all types of brain tumours. We are campaigning to increase the national investment in research to £35 million per year and funding sustainable Centres of Excellence across the UK.

Story

Brain Tumour Research is a charity putting significant funds into progressive, novel approaches to finding a cure for brain cancer. This is a research charity which means...

100% OF THE MONEY THE CHARITY RECEIVES WILL GO INTO RESEARCH!

My story:

I was just 27 when I was diagnosed with a high grade anaplastic astrocytoma brain tumour after a brain haemorrhage on a train. I underwent surgery to remove most of the tumour and began chemotherapy. After four months I stopped my innefective treatment and made significant changes to my diet. Two years after surgery, a scan showed no tumour growth and I decided to come off all medication for the epilepsy I had acquired. Nearly 3 years later my scans look even more promising and I am studying Human and Medical Science at the University of Westminster to investigate how metabolic approaches to cancer management, including a restricted ketogenic diet with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, could help other patients.

Brain cancer remains incurable. Without the tireless efforts of Brain Tumour Research, the encouraging work being done on ketogenic diets
for cancer management at Imperial College London would not be possible. This research has potential benefits for all types of cancer.

Nutrigenomics is an exciting, emerging field in cancer research. Brain Tumour Research has been very supportive of this research along with:

  • Testing the role of the ketogenic diet in the treatment of brain tumours in the lab as a prelude to a clinical trial this year.
  • Potential for running a clinical trial for a novel agent to treat recurrent brain tumours starving them of vital micronutrients.
  • Implementation of novel neurosurgical imaging equipment as well as MRI and PET imaging biomarkers.
  • Development of the ‘iKnife’- proven to accurately identify brain tumour tissue during surgery. This offers real-time analysis and therefore, immediate treatment options. The whole process takes a
couple of seconds and is entirely non-invasive.
  • Investigations by Professor Geoff Pilkington and his team on how we can trigger particular brain tumour cells to destroy themselves using both tricyclic drugs and insect virus mediated gene therapy
    approaches.

These achievement and proposals are all very promising, however to ensure this forward thinking work is continued at a progressive pace
there is a need for more money.

Brain cancer is the biggest cancer killer of the under 40’s and one of the most formidable diseases of mankind. There has been little change in outlook for those diagnosed with a brain tumour over the past four
decades. Brain Tumour Research has stated publicly that research into brain cancer is 100 years behind other cancers and it is woefully underfunded compared to other cancers.
