Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On the 29 April 2013, weather permitting, I am taking on the challenge of doing a skydive in order to raise much needed funds for Mental Health Research UK, a charity that funds research into the causes of, and treatments for, mental illness. My family and I gave our support to MHRUK following the untimely and tragic death of my son, Martin. Martin was a highly intelligent and musically talented young man who had, among his many enviable and not so enviable skills, a quick and ready wit, and the ability to turn up late for almost anything. Sadly his all too short life was blighted by severe depression, debilitating social phobia and chronic, long term insomnia. On 15 December 2011, at the age of 27, Martin was finally overcome by his mental health issues and took his own life, leaving his family and friends shocked, bewildered and deeply, deeply saddened. However annoying he could be, there is not a day goes by when I don’t miss Martin’s presence.

Last year a number of people went to some lengths to raise money for MHRUK because of Martin and I am very proud of and grateful for all the efforts that were made. This year, though, I thought it should be me who took on a fundraising challenge. Mindful that I was unlikely to get too much sponsorship for drinking tea and eating cake – which is what I am REALLY good at – I have decided to do a skydive instead. Yes, a SKYDIVE!! Anyone who knows me will appreciate that this is indeed a GREAT challenge for me. For those who don’t know me too well, just think of someone who’s a tad claustrophobic; not known for being adventurous (bit of a wuss, to be honest); on the petite side of petite and only just the right side of 60. However, despite these minor details, I’m up for the challenge and would be truly grateful for your support.

I hope that Martin would be a little bit proud of his old mum too.

UPDATE 1

Unfortunately the weather has decided to be awkward today - 29th April - and I've been told that it is too windy to make the skydive today. Happily the weather looks good tomorrow (30th) so that's when the challenge will go ahead...What a way to start your 60th birthday....I expect lots of cake afterwards! Fear not chums - I will be hurtling myself out of a plane and your generous donations will not have been in vain!

Ann

UPDATE 2 - 30th April 2013

What a difference a day makes! Challenge completed and I survive to tell the tale! Was a fantastic experience, but won't be doing it again....! Thank you so much for your support and all the donations to the charity - much appreciated by me and MHRUK.

Ann
