Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Ten years ago I had surgery to remove a brain tumour. This left me single sided deaf and over time the hearing in my other ear deteriorated to such an extent that I missed important sounds around the house, cooker timer, alarm, doorbell etc. and most importantly the fire alarm. I started to withdraw from social events and became very dependent on my husband Malcolm to accompany me whenever I wanted to visit somewhere. Deafness is an invisible disability and is often misunderstood, especially as I also have a facial palsy as a result of my surgery.
In February 2014 Hearing Dog Tegan came into our lives and she has had a profound effect, not only on my quality of life but that of Malcolm too. He can now go out happy in the knowledge that I am safe at home with Tegan there to alert me to the sounds I used to miss - and I go out without him now that Tegan accompanies me. She alerts other people to the fact that I am hearing impaired and not being rude when I do not respond to them. It has been a life changing experience for both of us and I am extremely grateful.
I now want to do something which is right outside of my comfort zone to try to help other people, adults and children, receive this extraordinary gift of a Hearing Dog. Wish me luck! Any donation you feel you can make, however large or small, will help the amazing Charity, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, and will be greatly appreciated.
