Uganda Mission Trip · 19 October 2019

Teams4u seeks to work with children and young people who are in need and to develop the skills of those who work with them. Consequently the partner organisations vary and the needs that require support. At preasent T4U are working with those who support orphans, street children, child soldiers and young offenders. The current partner organisations are located within Eastern Europe and Africa.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am joining a team of volunteers on a 10 night mission trip to Uganda. The trip focuses upon meeting the main objective of the charity which is to transform communities by empowering their teachers, educators, government officials, local non-government organisations, parents and children through education, healthcare, training and teams.

I will be helping to deliver the charity's aims to empower children and give them a sense of their self-worth through games, sports, play, story-telling, crafts and fun!

I have self-funded the trip and would like to help raise additional funding for this worthy cause.

Develop with Dignity Programme

In the Teso region, Teams4U have been working in numerous districts since 2006. Through this work, Teams4U projects support 71,556 children in the Kumi village. Teams4U discovered that most of the rural school girls did not own underwear and were therefore unable to participate in sports and games. The charity also discovered that this limited their access to school when they were old enough to start menstruation.

It is estimated that 1 in 10 African schoolgirls miss school or drop out of school because of menstruation and lack of sanitary wear.

With Teams4U's partnership with Ugandan manufacturer AFRIpads, the charity is hoping to address this issue for the 10,500 school girls aged between 12-16 in Kumi, Uganda. Alongside fellow volunteers and medical professionals, I will be visiting schools with packs of re-usuable sanitary pads, underwear and literature to explain menstruation and menstrual health to these young girls and to encourage positive body image and confidence.

I will also be supporting with delivering sex education classes to young boys in local schools.

Sanitation Programme

In a school of 800, up to 50 children are missing daily and the main reason is lack of hand washing facilities.

Teams4U have secured a grant from the Welsh Government to install hand washing and improved toilet facilities into 10 schools in the Kumi district. With support, Teams4U aims to extend this project to many more schools in the area. The charity's objective is to educate school children, teachers and parents as to the importance of good hygiene practices.

I will be participating in training sessions in schools whereby children are shown how to use and make a 'Tippy Tap Hand Washer' using some basic items that is quick and easy to make and a great idea for the home.
