Huntington's disease wasn't something I thought I would have to think about until 2 family members were diagnosed a few years ago, it was discovered after looking back through our family tree.
I didn't understand what this was or what it meant for my family, and researching the disease didn't give me any hope for their future.
Huntington's Disease is an inherited condition, caused by a faulty gene, which affects the nervous system and progressively gets worse. This means not only myself, but my siblings, are all at risk of having the gene. The disease affects every aspect of a persons life and strips them of who they are. Sufferers end up needing full time care and eventually die from secondary causes due to the disease. There is currently NO CURE, symptoms can not be slowed down or reversed, only managed with medications and therapies to aid in speech, movement and day to day living.
It breaks my heart knowing someone close to me is going to slowly lose themselves to this and there is little anyone can do.
It is important, not only for the sufferer, but the family and friends of those diagnosed that we do all we can to aid in the research of Huntington's Disease to find a cure. Please help my cause and donate to Huntington's Disease Association
