First off...BIG Thanks to the Walsall Saddlers Rotary Club and the Grantham Yorke Trust for there donations..

Where will your money be going?

It won't be a holiday, it will be hard work, and whilst out there I will be living with the bare minimum! In basic living conditions, and no alcohol!!! I won’t know exactly the plan until I go out there but as a venturer, I will be taking part in environmental / community projects. Previously the projects that Raleigh have conducted have helped the local communities by supporting their efforts to improve their standard of living by bringing in low cost technologies and resources that are renewable and sustainable, such as rain water harvesting, biogas ovens, gravity fed water systems and composting toilets. This enables the locals to access basic services that we take for granted, such as water, sanitation, education and energy. Raleigh’s partners in the country help them organise projects that are needed and worthwhile within the communities and Raleigh has a permanent base within the country with permanent staff enabling them to maintain long term relationships with the government, non-government organisations and local communities and have access to remote areas inaccessible by tourists.

Community projects

These projects aim to empower rural and indigenous communities as well as improve their health and education services. Previous community projects have included building gravity-fed water systems to provide whole communities with clean, unpolluted drinking water that is easily accessible and last for generations to come. Also, helping locals to build a secondary school in the community.

The community phase gives Venturers a unique experience to live and work with the community and interact with local people.

Environmental projects

Costa Rica has many National Parks protecting its beauty. These projects are remote and previous projects include: Turtle conservation, turtle egg collection and looking after the hatchery, as well as constructing a trail that runs behind the beach and plant trees to reforest this area. Egg collection is vital to stop poachers from reducing the number of turtles in the ocean, which is already very low.

Other environmental work includes preservation and increasing tourist numbers in National Parks.

Since 1984 Raleigh International they have inspired over 30,000 people from all walks of life, nationalities and ages to get out there and rise to the challenges of life on expedition. With a permanent presence and long-standing partnerships with government, non-governmental organisations and local communities, we are dedicated to bringing communities together, often for the first time, giving them the resources and motivation to achieve sustainable development.

VISION:

Raleigh’s vision is to create a global community of inspired and inspiring young people committed to working together regardless of age, social background, culture and nationality, building strong communities and making a difference to their world.

MISSION:

To inspire people to make a positive difference throughout their lives by exposing them to adventurous expeditions and challenging programmes of practical, diverse team-based community and environmental service in partnership with non-governmental organisations, governments, conservationists and marginalised communities around the world.

VALUES:

Raleigh believes that experiencing adventurous and challenging situations that test our courage, innovation and resilience develops our character and leadership skills.

1. advancement of education and global citizenship

2. relief of those in need by reason of disadvantage

3. advancement of environmental protection and sustainable community development.
