Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Between the 1st and the 30th June 2015 I'm going to climb Falkland Hill (East Lomond) 27 times to hopefully raise some money for remote Nepalese communities. In total, I will climb just over 29035ft, the height of Mount Everest. I won't be able to do this every day so there will be times when I will have to make multiple ascents on the same day to reach my target. I will take the north route from Falkland village to the summit, climbing 1082 feet each time. Every round trip will take about an hour.
The recent earthquakes in Nepal have devastated a country I love and with which I have a strong, personal connection. I have been deeply saddened thinking about the remote mountain villages I have been fortunate enough to walk through during my visits to the country and worried about how those communities will be able to rebuild lives which were already difficult. Many of these communities are hugely dependent on the income generated from trekkers and climbers. Post earthquake, no one knows when, or if, tourism will return to Nepal and it's impossible to imagine what the future holds for these communities without it.
Community Action Nepal was founded by renowned British mountaineer, Doug Scott, who has worked with the Nepalese since 1989. Initially this was to improve the working conditions of those involved in the trekking industry but this developed into over 40 projects aiming to improve the living conditions within many mountain communities by setting up and maintaining village schools, medical posts, the installation of clean drinking water and shelters for porters.
By giving to Community Action Nepal your donation will be used to directly help the people of rural Nepal. The company I work for, Diageo, will double whatever we raise so I would be hugely grateful if you could support me and anything you can give will be amazing.
Thank you, Audrey
What is Community Action Nepal?
CAN is a mountaineers’ charity to help mountain people to help themselves raise their standard of living and strengthen indigenous, community-based culture.
Where does Community Action Nepal function?
CAN operates mainly in the Middle Hill Regions of Nepal from where the majority of the porters originate. It is the porters who make it possible for walkers and climbers to enjoy the Peaks and Passes of Nepal
