We tackle Ocean threats by turning Ocean Science into understandable, practical tools; engaging people through film and popular culture; and running engagement programmes for youth. As the first generation to deeply understand Ocean issues, we’re also the last generation who can stop them.

Story

This October I am heading off to The Albanian Alps, or the Accursed Mountains, one of the wildest areas of Europe.

I will be trekking across 3 countries in 3 days, climbing the highest peak in Montenegro, crossing border in Kosovo, one of the most protected and controlled borders of the Cold War, and hiking 60 km in total to raise awareness of plastic pollution.

The Albanian Alps remains one of the poorest regions in Europe and its economy is based mainly on agriculture and tourism.

Why is this important?

There is a lot plastic in the ocean – if we keep producing plastics at predicted rates, plastics in the ocean will outweigh fish pound for pound in 2050.

An estimated 15 to 51 trillion microplastic particles are floating in the world’s oceans - after ingesting microplastics, seals, and other animals suffer for months or years before they die.

Every single piece of plastic ever made still exists and once it gets washed into waterways, it costs about $13 billion annually in losses for shipping, tourism and fishing industries. It disrupts marine ecosystems and threatens food security for people who depend on fishing.

How does your donation help?

Plastic Oceans educate and research solutions to protect our ocean from plastic pollution. Their mission is to stop plastic reaching the oceans within a generation through working with leading scientists, a wide range of businesses and education programmes.

“We have to act. We have to act now to try and clear up some of the appalling damage we have made to the ocean and that is going to require positive action” Sir David Attenborough

You can help by taking positive action and donating – you will not be paying for the trip, it is covered by myself and Acre, which means every single donation is going to Plastic Oceans.
