My story
It all started from the day I was born (31.12.97). I was one of triplets but my identical twin sister, Jasmine, was still born and my brother and I were born 9 weeks early. Being less than 2lbs I was critically ill and diagnosed with impaired kidney function. Doctors continued to monitor me, until the age of 6 when my kidney soon gave up and I was put on peritoneal dialysis. Lasting for 12 hour a night , 6 days a week my nights were far from normal. This effected the whole family, consisting of two older sisters, my twin brother and mum and dad. We could not go on your average family holiday and tended to stay nearer to home.
On the one occasion when we went to Center Parcs in the Lake District, with boxes full of equipment and dialysis machine we soon found ourselves travelling back to Manchester Children's hospital, as the machine did not work and my peritoneal tube had come out. I took this in my stride and didn't know anything different. I could see I was different to the other children, not attending ballet classes which I loved and going swimming with the added stress of hiding the tube.
Life carried on, until the age of 8 when I received my donor kidney. I could eat and drink whatever I wanted, as it was restricted before. I had more energy and finally went back to dancing. I could attend sleepovers with my friends like normal, as I was no longer attached to a machine. Only difference now, is that I take daily anti-rejection medication.
Without my donor family I would not have been able to achieve my full potential and live life to the full.
The Transplant games have been important to me ever since. At my first games in Edinburgh (2006) I received two trophies for the best newcomer and the best girl in the 6-8 age category and because of my successes every year, I have been selected to represent the British team in 2015.
The money that I raise through sponsorship and donations will go to the costs of participating in Argentina for the World Transplant Games.
"A Kidney transplant has improved the quality of life for my precious daughter. I love her smile and watching her grow into a beautiful and caring person. I'm extremely proud of her dedication at the games and her selection for the World Transplant Games in Argentina in 2015" - Denise Brookes, Mother.
