BCNS Marathon Challenge · 27 May 2017
Welcome to our fundraising page. We are taking part in the BCNS challenge and this year will be the fourth year running in which we have taken part. Each year we aim to raise not only awareness for the canal network but also donations for a charity of choice which this year happens to be The British Heart foundation.
The BHF has helped halve the number of people dying from heart and circulatory disease in the UK but sadly every day hundreds of people lose their lives. Every week 2000 families in the UK lose a loved one to heart disease. The number of children who survive being born without a heart defect has turned around significantly with the help of the BHF research. In 1961 only 20 percent lived till their first birthday. Now thanks to this research this number has dropped by 80 percent ! The British Heart Foundation has a new research strategy in which between 2015-2020 their aim is to fund half a billion pounds of life saving research within these five years. Even with this new research strategy every penny helps! £25 could pay for an hour of research by an early career scientist !
Now Back to the challenge this year marks the 50th anniversary in which the challenge was created. Although the challenge does not run every year. The aim of the challenge is simple, start anywhere on the BCN network and within a 24 hour period cover as many miles( speed limit is a strict 4mph) and locks as possible. On the morning of Saturday the 27th of may at precisely 8 am the challenge begins from your chosen spot . At 8 am you can open your envelope which contains your logbook and also your clues for challenge questions that you may come across upon your route.
This year our team of 5 will step back in time aboard our vessel with our theme of pirates and ale. Using our highly Secretive map our route could exceed over 80 locks as we make our way to titford pump house to secure the treasure the burger van contains !!!
If you would like to support your ShipMates on there voyage please donate . A little or a lot whatever you can afford will lend a helping hand to the research the British heart foundation makes.
