2017 Inverness Half Marathon & 5K Fun Run · 12 March 2017 ·

We help people diagnosed with a brain tumour. We aim to give everyone diagnosed access to the resources that will put them back in control. We enable brain tumour patients and carers to become resilient and to utilise brain tumour support resources from all providers to their full potential.

Story

On the 12th March I will be taking part in my first ever fundraising event and running the Inverness Half Marathon to raise funds for Brainstrust. While some people do half marathons for fun(!), this will be a challenge for me - especially as I am really not a fan of running!

There are over 55,000 people living with and beyond a brain tumour diagnosis in the UK. The Brainstrust is the only charity dedicated to brain tumour support in the UK and is available, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Brainstrust helps thousands of people with a brain tumour, and their caregivers, to be less afraid, less alone, and more in control.

About a year-and-a-half ago I lost my Dad to cancer. His original diagnosis was kidney cancer, but probably the most devastating part of his illness was when the cancer spread to his brain. While my Mum coped with my Dad's illness and cared for him incredibly, support from an organisation such as Brainstrust would have made a huge difference. The funds raised will hopefully mean that more people diagnosed with a brain tumour and their families will get the support they need and not have to face such a life-changing diagnosis alone.

Any donation you could make would be gratefully received. I have set an extremely ambitious target of £500 considering the run is less than 3 weeks away! My employer, SSE, runs a matched funding scheme and will match any funds I raise up to £250. This could mean £750 for Brainstrust if I reach my £500 target. Below is what could be funded with your support:

  • £10 will fund vital information to help people understand a brain tumour diagnosis.
  • £50 funds a brain box, a toolkit packed with resources to help people with a brain tumour to take control.
  • £200 will fund a meet up near you. These events help people with a brain tumour to connect with each other and to be less alone.
