Bobby's 5,000 miles challenge

Riding 5,000 miles on the indoor bike in 2022 · 31 December 2022
Why a cycle?
After a certain pandemic began I found myself not exercising and putting on weight rapidly... After a long time doing nothing, we got an indoor bike and I love it (maybe not 5,000 miles love it mind). I clocked up 1,400 miles last year and wanted to set a harder challenge for 2022. Being too afraid of going out on the road, all my miles will be clocked indoors.
How will I do it?
If I could ride every day, I'd need to average about 14 miles a day. Having a toddler and expecting a second baby in June, it’s unlikely I’ll be able to commit to riding every day, so instead, my plan is to:
- Ride 6 days a week on average
- Minimum daily distance 10 miles
- Complete over 1,000 rides when including warm ups and cool downs
- Ride through the pain and tiredness!!
Why CALM?
I know that this time has had a huge impact on mental health, and having been close to several people affected by suicide, I decided I would make it a really difficult challenge and raise money to try prevent other people from suffering in future.
Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is leading a movement against suicide. Every week 125 people in the UK take their own lives. And 75% of all UK suicides are male. CALM exists to change this by offering life saving services, provoking conversation and bringing people together to reject living miserably. From advice on our site, through to free, confidential chats with our helpline staff, online or on the phone, we’re here for whoever needs us, every day. No matter what. £8 is enough to fund one potentially life-saving call.
