Story
We are all really excited to take part in this year's Exmoor challenge. Our team consists of me (Amelia Burgess), Niamh Pratt Smith, Hannah Broadbelt and Ella Smith and we will be walking 16 miles across Exmoor on April 29th to raise money for the Southwest Children's hospice.
The Exmoor Youth Challenge is an annual event for children between 10 and 17 years of age. There are 4 people in a team and they have to follow a 16 mile route which is not marked - so following instructions , map reading and compass skills are essential. There are a series of check points along the route and each leg has to be completed in a pre-determined time - points are deducted if teams arrive too early or too late, and those who get very tired and lag too much are pulled out of the challenge. Only those who successfully complete the event are presented with a medal.
So far we have had some first aid training thanks to Helen (Niamh's mum) so that we will know what to do if one of us is injured. We have had our first walk together which wasn't particularly long (5 miles) but tested our navigational skills and our ability to eat lots of chocolate snacks. We've got several more walks planned on Dartmoor and one on Exmoor, so we'll gradually build up stamina and fitness to complete the 16 miles.
