Here we are again, another year on and looking for sponsorship for a fantastic charity namely Kidney Wales Foundation.

It was four years ago I entered my first Cardiff 10K at the mature age of 63 to help raise funds for Kidney Wales after being inspired by my daughter Kathryn who ran her first Cardiff 10K in 2014 because of my kidney problems which i have had for 35 years and still attend the University Hospital of Wales Kidney department on a regular basis.

Up until January 2013 I have had many ups and downs with my condition but it took a turn for the worse and put me in a position where dialysis or a kidney transplant were options, also at this time there was a new third option which was chemotherapy.

I opted for the chemotherapy and was given seven sessions, which to my amazement my kidneys responded to this treatment to the extent that I no longer needed to be on the transplant register or receive dialysis.

I went to support Kathryn on her first Cardiff 10K and was also inspired by the variety of people taking part. Apart from the Elite runners there were people who were there to enjoy the day, even if they walked the route. After the Cardiff 10K had finished I looked at the times of the slowest runner/walker and said to myself " I can do that", so I tried to get myself fitter and was able to start and finish my first Cardiff 10K in 2015. To my surprise I did not come last. My time was around 84mins but what a feeling of achievement I had when I crossed the finish line.

As most people know I am not built for speed but it was the taking part and knowing my fund raising will help kidney patients and their families to have better lives. This September will be my fifth Cardiff 10K (hopefully I will be fit enough again) and look forward to beating my personal best time of 82mins 29secs.
