Story

My names Brooke Evans and in September 2013 I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia at the age of 17. It changed my life forever but not in the way I expected.

I received 8 months of intensive chemotherapy and 1.5 years maintenance chemotherapy to get myself into remission. Thanks to Cure Leukaemia I opted to go on a trial, UKALL 2011 whereby I was assigned a research nurse who was funded by Cure Leukaemia to get access to my life saving drugs. So essentially they saved my life, how cool  :). So therefore I’ll be eternally grateful to this charity for the rest of my life.

Since then I’ve completed my A-levels, got myself a degree in adult nursing (even cooler eh? :) ) and I am now working as a nurse treating patients with blood cancer (what a turn around)

I also have tried my best to support Cure Leukaemia in any way I can, I’ve completed a charity car sprint raising over £5000, ran the Great Birmingham Run in 2016 raising over £5000, and also spend my time helping to support Cure Leukaemia at different events. My hope is by doing so I’ll make a difference, to not only those people suffering with blood cancer now, but those who will be effected in the future !

So here comes the real challenge. I decided 2019 needed to be the year for a big challenge. I saw Cure Leukaemias photos of their London to Paris event and thought why not that looks fun haha !  The realisation has now hit what a huge challenge I have set myself. I am not a cyclist and 100% am amateur I assure you. So this year I am riding the 42 mile Velo bike ride in Birmingham, sponsored by Ribble ( the awesome guys who have kindly given me a bike for free! Yeah how crazy ! ) on Sunday the 12th May 2019. This ride also falls on international nurses day so this will be an amazing day to celebrate being a nurse and what a fab job it is ! Then on September 12th 2019 I’ll start my journey from London to Paris for the 300 mile bike ride !

This ride means so much to me so I’m determined to train as hard as I can to reach my goals and raise as much money for Cure Leukaemia as possible and raise awareness for blood cancer. I’ve set my self a pretty high fundraising target, but I like to think big, so that’s what I am doing !

So yeah call me crazy but if you’d like to sponsor me on this epic journey it would mean the world to me! Oh if anyone has any tips on road biking I’d be very appreciative !

Lots of love

Brooke xo

Cure Leukaemia helps blood cancer patients to access pioneering drug and transplant treatments by funding a network of specialist research nurses across the UK. Without these nurses, to ensure patients are monitored and cared for, clinical trials of these new treatments would not run and patients, that have exhausted standard treatment options, would miss out on potentially lifesaving therapies. Every penny raised for Cure Leukaemia helps save lives and also hastens global progress towards the eradication of all forms of blood cancer.

Cure Leukaemia fund research nurses at 15 hospitals across the UK. These roles form the Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP) network giving patients, from a catchment area of 30m, access to potentially life-saving treatments through clinical trials, with plans to fund a paediatric network on the way.
