The Pavers &The Blasters & The Plodders,
Weather conditions all week and then frequent rain through the day and night made the event even harder than we anticipated. Sadly the magnificent surroundings of the South Pennines and its spectacular views gave way to an endurance event which tested the body and mind to the limit. It is no exageration to say that to have been part of this day will live in the memories of those who took part for many years to come.
Chris Haigh's effort saw him walk through 7 hours of darkness and rain to complete the 50 miles at 4am, following home Andy Ambler, Marc Stoker and Barry Armstrong (the first team to finish) by 11pm Saturday and Richard Marshall and Chris Georgiou, 1am Sunday. Lee Whitton was forced to retire at 38 miles with a foot injury and Bob England was too ill to continue after 30 miles.
During the walk Chris G and Richard thwarted a route saboteur and successfully repositioned way markers for those following in the dark. Marc, Barry and Andy spotted some walkers taking drastic shortcuts, they also had a close encounter with a mating bull.
We were delighted to receive all your texts on the day and for the support of all our friends and family who turned up at various points on the route. You have no idea how pleased we were to see you. Thanks to Karl Martin and little Eddie for cheering us through the woods at Todmorden and to Bruce Farrar for his dogged support all day. To our nocturnal bacon butty suppliers, what a lift that was! You all were magnificent.
As for next year.......don't ask, get your own application in, we'll be happy to advise you.
Richard, Chris G, Chris H, Andy, Marc, Barry, Lee and Bob
