Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity has launched this appeal to help build a new-look children’s department and transform the experience of its young patients and their families.

Story

My goal is to try and complete 15,000 Burpees, a 26 Mile Ski on the Ski-Erg, and a 52 mile cycle in the month of March.

Having served 22+ years in the Army - with the majority based at Wattisham Airfield - I want to give something back to Suffolk. I came across this charity who have an ambitious goal of reaching the 2.5 million mark to be able to rebuild the children's ward at Ipswich Hospital.

Everyone I speak to thinks £31k can’t be done, but as someone who never quits I know I will keep going to get this over the line.

As a father I’ve spent time in the children’s ward and I’ve also been really lucky to not have to face serious illness with my children but I know many do.

The children, parents, families and hospital staff are the true  inspirational heroes here and I don’t know how they have the strength but thank goodness they do. I want to raise this money for the little people who courageously fight their battles in the hospital and for the support around them. I hope this can help them to enjoy their time even just a little bit more when having to come for treatment. They deserve every moment of happiness.

I’m hoping together as a county we can raise this ambitious amount and to complete the target that so many others have already tirelessly contributed to raising.

Please share - I need your help.

The money from the Children's Appeal aims to create a modern, welcoming and child-friendly environment fit for the 21st century, with improved facilities for patients and their families or carers.

Patients and their families have been involved in helping to draw up the plans, which include:

•Increasing outpatient clinic rooms, with dedicated spaces allocated for specialist clinics such as diabetes, cystic fibrosis and physiotherapy

•Creating separate entrances for the outpatients and inpatients departments

•Adding multiple break-out play areas to give all children the chance to play

•Refurbishing the outside play area on the ward

•Increasing number of beds, en-suite and side rooms

•Dedicated teenage / young person spaces will be created

•A two-bed high dependency area will be created

•More space will be provided in bays for specialist equipment and so that parents can stay with their children

•A separate dining area will be introduced so that patients can eat away from others who may be nil by mouth or have an eating disorder
