Story

Hi, we would firstly like to thank you for visiting our page.

This is our story

Why

In November 2013, our then 16month old son Joshua (now 4yrs) had a terrible accident with a hot steam iron, the steam causing horrific damage to the right-hand side of his face/ear and neck. With the fast response of the Northwest Ambulance Service and hospital staff we were able to get to the right place fast, which was the Burns Unit at the Manchester Royal Children's Hospital, Manchester, uk. There we spent the next 4 weeks constantly with Josh having operations daily to scrub/clean the affected area, as well as have skin grafts along with other treatments, at this time emotions were high all around, lots of pain was seen/heard, lots of questions being asked, lots of tears. Once we were able to go home we returned to the hospital/ward x3 a week for dressing change/operations to clean effected area, this became hard on all involved as Josh started to recognise people on the ward, realise what was going to happen next, became tolerant to some of the sedation due to regularity etc, with us (parents) one of us having to take him to theatre to help sedate him as he was getting wound up to the point that on occasions it was nearly called off, this was obviously hard to watch/do, the staff there completely understanding and helped like you wouldn't believe, everything explained in detail, what will/was going to happen beforehand, Josh being there first priority. 3 yrs later Josh has been discharged from the ward and now attends out patients, he wears a head guard/ear piece, which keeps the skin smooth and keeps the ear channel open as he grows, having to be assessed and re-measured regularly. With the efforts of all involved and Josh on the mend we want to give something back.

What

I have pledged to raise not only awareness but £20,000 to fund an annual event from the Manchester Royal Children’s Hospital (MRCH) which is a "Burns Camp" (for a more in-depth description as to where the funds go/burns camp info please see following link) http://www.rmchcharity.org.uk/burns-camp-2016-%C2%A348000 The Burns Unit run a two week-long, residential Burns Camps per year – one camp for younger children (aged 5-10) and one for older children (aged 11-16). Both camps provide fun activities geared towards rehabilitation and increasing self-esteem. The cost of sending one child to the camp, as well as the staffing costs, is £1,000. We would like to provide this opportunity to 20+ children.

When

In 2018 myself and Jamie Ramsey will be running "Hadrian's Wall" http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/hadrians-wall-path taking the
(were told) tougher route starting in Scotland heading to Newcastle, covering 90miles (over 2 days) with rucksacks & essentials as we will be camping rough at the end of day 1. Having only ran as far as marathon distance this is a real test and demanding mentally and physically, but we are preparing ourselves and we are looking forward to the challenge.
