Every year the charity Project Harar runs an eight week 'Complex Surgical Mission' that treats approximately 50 adults and children with major head and neck disfigurement. In February 2020 I will be returning to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for the sixth time. I will be joining a large group of international and Ethiopian medical professionals to help run the main operative weeks of the mission. 

Project Harar gives patients from rural Ethiopia the opportunity to receive life changing surgery that allows them to re-integrate back into their communities and return to work and family life.

This year we will be building on a successful pilot project from last year to follow-up and triage all patients remotely using smart phone technology and local government officials. This cost saving initiative ensures all patients are seen in their rural communities after discharge and if they have problems can be supported to see us on the complex mission. We will also be running our second annual teaching conference at Yekatit 12 Hospital themed around Trauma, a huge cause of morbidity and mortality in young people in low-income and middle-income countries worldwide.
