Running Euro 2016 · 10 June 2016
Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) is an inherited, degenerative eye disease that can cause severe visual impairment and blindness over time due to the progressive deterioration of cells in the retina. It is one of many cruel diseases in life and it has affected both my Dad and my Uncle.
RP Fighting Blindness are a UK based charity which aim to support those affected by RP and also fund important research into potential cures and treatments of RP. It is a cause that I feel very strongly about supporting. This summer I plan to run upwards of 500 miles around France in a bid to raise money for the charity. The 2016 European Championship's start in Paris on June 10th. With games scheduled daily around the country I intend to run from city to city catching 8 matches in 7 cities across 17 days. In the north I will run from Paris to Lille and then onto Lens. In the south I will run from Nice to Marseille before heading inland to Saint Etienne and Lyon.
I will average around 30 miles a day on foot for the 2 and half weeks. Some days will be shorter however between Marseille and Saint Etienne I will average 50 miles a day for 4 days in order to catch games in both cities. I expect each of these days to be exceptionally tough and stringing 4 in a row together is going to be a real test in the summer heat.
It certainly is not going to be easy however with the support of friends and family I believe it is going to be an amazing two and half weeks. This will be the toughest physical challenge of my life and will be at the limit of my capabilities. I fully expect to be pushed to my breaking point by the challenge I've set myself. However if I can stay injury free I'm confident I can achieve my goal of 500+ miles and be present in the 7 different cities for the 8 matches.
My inspiration for this trip comes from the likes of Eddie Izzard running daily marathons around the UK, James Brooman running coast to coast across Australia and David Alley running around the perimiter of Australia averaging nearly 50 miles a day for months on end.
Any donation would be massively appreciated, yes 50 quid or 20 quid is great but even if it's a fiver or a gold coin donation it all adds up and will help contribute to a cause that means a lot.
If you can't donate any messages of support will be greatly appreciated as I know if my body starts to break down during the challenge these will keep me putting one foot in front of another.
Any questions about the charity in question, my personal reasons for supporting it or for more details regarding the run please drop me a message.
In the build up to June I plan to post regular updates on this page regarding my training and will try to keep it updated during the run itself.
Thank you,
Cameron
