On the 18th of February 2013 I lost my brother Ian to a brain tumour. When Ian was diagnosed he didn't sit back and dwell on it, as always he thought of other people that are going through this cruel disease and wanted to help raise much needed funds to contribute to research and support, the kind of support that Ian and our family received at this traumatic time.

Ian requested that I join his daughter Emma in some sort of event that would raise funds for this worthy course. This is where the Leeds 10k came into it, but first I would like to tell you a little bit about my brother Ian. I will try keep this brief as I could talk about him forever and then some more, he is funny, caring and without doubt the bravest person I have ever known, when myself and all our family were falling apart, Ian was the one that picked us all back up with his one liners, strength, support and determination, the same values he also showed to fight his illness. I hear you all say " it should have been the other way around" and it should but he put his family before himself, that was Ian.

I remember so well Ian waiting at the finish line of the Leeds 10k in 2012 looking so proud of his family and new found friends for taking part and raising much needed funds for this worthy course. It also has to be said that I am the proud one, proud that I had Ian as my brother and also my best friend for 50 years.  

Ian is my inspiration and the reason why for the 3rd year running I am again taking part in the Leeds 10K and for the 3rd year running I am also still reading reports that no progress on funding has been made to fund research into this evil disease.The report that was published yesterday states that there are around 9,000 new cases of primary brain tumours diagnosed in the UK every year, of which approximately 1,000 patients diagnosed are in the Yorkshire and Humberside region. Only 1% of the national spend on cancer research is spent on brain tumours, despite the fact that 1 in 50 people who die under the age of 60 do so from brain tumours. The report also states that at the rate of funding it will take approximately 100 years to find a cure for brain cancer, this is unacceptable and has to change to stop more precious lives being lost..
