Swimathon 2019 · 29 March 2019 to 31 March 2019 ·

Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie are calling on the nation to get down to the pool for Swimathon 2019 - thousands of swimmers, two great causes, one big charity challenge.

Story

In 2015 and 2016 I did swimathons as part of a team, raising money for cancer research and sports relief.  But in 2017 my swimming buddy was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that medicine doesn't really have an answer to.  Without her, going swimming didn't really seem the same.  It was a thing we did together, and doing it while she was stuck in a hospital felt... wrong.

For a while we thought she was getting better; she was her usual chatty self, albeit in pain - then in mid 2018 she passed away.

I've thought for a long time about whether I really wanna do a swimathon without her; not least because she was always the competitive energetic one, and neither of us could do 5k alone.  After a lot of thinking it through, I think the fact that it's raising money for cancer research is something she'd approve of, and in time her memory is less of thing to grieve for, than a force to inspire, a voice reminding us all to get off our asses and live the best we can.

So I'm swimming 5k for Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie.  I don't know anyone who hasn't been or won't be touched by cancer at some point in their lives, whether through illness or watching loved ones suffer.  Every penny helps - please be generous.
