Story

Affecting almost 10,000 people per year in the UK, Pancreatic Cancer remains incredibly difficult to treat effectively and has the lowest survival rate of all cancers.

Whilst the outlook for many other cancers has improved greatly over the past few decades, the 5 year survival rate for Pancreatic Cancer remains the same as it was 40 years ago at only 3%. Put another way, 97% of people with Pancreatic Cancer will be dead within 5 years, many dying soon after receiving the overwhelming news of diagnosis.

Despite this dreadful outlook, research into Pancreatic Cancer remains poorly supported gaining only 1% of funding from major bodies.

One year ago, Georgie's father Christopher, started experiencing acute abdominal pain and noticed his skin turning yellow. As a family GP of over 40 years, he knew the likely diagnosis and this was soon confirmed by his local hospital. Weekly chemotherapy has so far kept the tumour at bay, but both he and his family know that this will soon change. Unlike many other cancers where new treatments have been developed, a diagnosis of Pancreatic Cancer remains a death sentence.

Whilst this challenging trek does not compare to the ordeal faced by Christopher, Georgie very much hopes, that her efforts to climb the highest mountain in Africa, along with those of her oldest friends, Alex, Mags (Jess), Hetty and Naomi, will help raise awareness and much needed funds required for research into this devastating disease.

It’s unacceptable that more than half of people diagnosed with the deadliest common cancer die within three months. That’s why they need and deserve more. More research, more funding, more breakthroughs. More than hope. Together we’ll make that possible.
