World Kidney Day (12th March) is to raise awareness of kidney diseases. Children who develop kidney disease have it for life, and unlike childhood leukaemia, the disease is incurable. Adults with advanced kidney disease can have dialysis or a transplant, but their life expectancy is poorer than some common cancers. My old place of work, the Freeman Hospital, is putting on a range of events to attract attention to kidney disease. AS part of that, I'm spending from 10am to 3pm on a turbo trainer - a bike mounted on a variable resistance machine - apart from loo stops. Everyone knows I love being on a bike, but that's outdoors. This is different. Most of the hard cyclists I know struggle to spend longer than 60 minutes on a turbo. All funds will go direct to Kidney Research UK - a great charity of which I'm proud to be a Trustee.
