Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
So I have decided to enter Marathon des Sables 2017 "the toughest foot race on earth" - crazy I know! A bit about the race: MDS is a multiday ultra marathon across the Sahara Desert where participants will cover over 250km (156 miles) in six days through dunes, over rocky jebels, and across white-hot salt plains with temperatures regularly reaching 50 centigrade. On day 4 there is the long stage of 80+ kms (52+miles) where I will be running till the sun comes up the following morning. The race is self-sufficient with water rations supplied at check points, meaning I have to carry all my equipment, sleep stuff and a weeks supply of food (that will be a challenge in itself - I love food!).
Apparently my feet will blister, swell, crack and bleed under the pressure - great!
The reasons why I have chosen to raise money for CRY. As some of you may know my mother died when she was 34 due to acute heart failure/ sudden arrhythmic death syndrome. This disease primarily strikes young persons that appear to be in good health, with those that are sporty at the highest risk from SADS due to the stress that they put their hearts under, because it can exacerbate an underlying condition.
Although this is not hereditary my sisters and I have all had our hearts tested from the ages of 3,5,7 and at various intervals throughout our lives to ensure that any potential cardiac problems are identified and have had positive results. I will still continue to have cardiac screenings throughout my life (especially with all the crazy sporting events I enter).
Every week in the UK 12 young people die of undiagnosed heart conditions. CRY encourages cardiac screening and funds medical research in order to reduce the number of deaths. CRY also engage with Parliament in order to raise the concern on the number of young cardiac deaths, as with compulsory screening many could be prevented.
I will be taking an IPod with me, but this will be for emergency use only, when I am at my lowest. So when sponsoring me I would like it if you could choose a song to form the playlist- make sure it is a good 'en!
*I will be paying the £3950 entry fee myself, as well as insurance, equipment, training event entry fees and any other costs incurred. 100% of donations will go to the charity.
