Lord Mayor's Appeal Abseil Challenge · 14 October 2016 ·
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
The last time I abseiled I ended up base over apex looking at the Brecon Beacons from an unusual perspective. Nevertheless when I saw the charities this year's Lord Mayor's Appeal was supporting I knew I had to take this challenge.
I served with the Sea Cadets for ten years. I commanded Bromley and Croydon Units, and was a yacht skipper with TS REBEL, the Sea Cadet sail training centre at Walton-on-the-Naze. On a typical short "exped", young people would arrive on a Friday evening perhaps never having even seen a sailing yacht before, by Sunday evening they'd have all taken the boat to sea, set the sails, controlled them and taken them down again, steered the boat at sea, moored and anchored, and of course learning about team work and supporting each other all along the way. I've seen first hand how much difference time with the Sea Cadets can make in improving the self-confidence, self-esteem, respect for self and for others in these young people.
My brother, sister and niece all got Type 1 diabetes as young children, needing multiple insulin injections, test and careful calculations balancing carbohydrate intake with activity every single day.The JDRF is on the brink of revolutionising treatment and if we can help them over the line that would make such a difference.
