Story

John was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes 13 years ago when he was just 3 years old. Living with Type 1 is tough as there is never a day off but John has never let it get in the way of a full active life. We live in the hope that during his lifetime there will be a cure and the current research suggests we are getting closer and closer. JDRF (juvenile diabetes research foundation) not only raise funds for this research but also look at solutions to make day to day life more manageable. They give advice and support to Type 1 diabetics and their families.

Ten years ago I completed an arduous hike across Iceland and thanks to the generosity of friends and family raised over £15k. Ten years feels like a sufficient amount of time to wait before asking you all to put your hands in your pockets again!

Whilst this time shouldn’t be as tough physically it will be a huge mental challenge as those of you who know me well will know I like to keep my feet firmly on the ground! The challenge includes a climb of 1000 steps to reach the wall then a trek through 11 watchtowers to the Heavenly Ladder with the last section including a climb of around 45 degrees and another 460 steps. We will head away from the tourist route and along disused sections of the Wall where we will help with repairs. The good news is John has agreed to come along and hold my hand! John’s challenge will be to manage his diabetes with strenuous exercise and a different diet and of course to encourage me on and up.

We will be paying for all the costs of our time in China and so every penny we raise will go to JDRF.
