Reading Half Marathon 2012 · 1 April 2012 ·

It’s unacceptable that more than half of people diagnosed with the deadliest common cancer die within three months. That’s why they need and deserve more. More research, more funding, more breakthroughs. More than hope. Together we’ll make that possible.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am running the Reading Half Marathon to support Pancreatic Cancer UK. A year ago, I had never heard of this charity, thankfully I had no need to have paid it much attention. It is a fairly small charity and is in much need of more support.

This charity has become very close to my heart due to the support that they have shown my brother in-law Scott. He was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in July 2010 at the age of 33. He has been fighting this cancer for 18 months.

Being told he has Pancreatic cancer came as a huge shock as only 1% of people who have PC are under the age of 60. He was previously fit and healthy, a regular gym goer, didn't smoke and didn't excessively drink. These factors lead to a series of misdiagnosis as PC was far down the list of things that could be wrong with such a young and healthy man.
It was even more of a shock hearing that he was terminally ill in July 2011, with a couple of months to live.

Scott would not give in, he would fight this illness and go on to witness his sons fourth birthday and then fight on passed the time that the doctors said he had left, we celebrated Christmas and then new year and all these times are so precious to the whole family.
Pancreatic Cancer UK are here to try and find a way of allowing more families share these moments together. They give support and valuable advice to sufferers and loved ones.

Sadly on Friday 20th January, Scott lost his battle. I know he wanted us to raise as much money as we can and even though I have hit the target indicated at the top of the page, I still want to raise more.

As with most cancers, time is not a luxury and diagnosis is best made early. This is one of the things that can be improved by raising awareness and funding this charity.

So please, I know people frequently ask you to give to charities and its natural to pick a couple that are closest to you, but as with Scott, this can happen to anybody and in around 96% of cases the outcome is the same.

This is a small charity that makes a huge difference in peoples lives and they desperately need our support.

Please donate, even if its just £2 or what ever you can give.

Thank you for your support from myself, Scott and his wife Nikki (my sister), Jake (age 4) and Jade (age 14) xxx

Sleep well brother, I love you xxx
