Story
Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In 2008 Stuart Mangan, suffered a severe spinal injury while playing rugby for the club and tragically died on the 7th August 2009. Stuart was only 26 and his injury greatly affected players at Hammersmith and Fulham RFC, who have since raised over £140,000 for Stuart and the injured players charities.
His death also affected the international rugby playing community and an idea that began between Stuart and Matt Hampson (England Under 20’s Prop while Stuart was in hospital), for an England vs. Ireland Legends Charity game, was later developed by Shane Byrne and Len Dineen of Ireland & Martin Corry and Jason Leonard of England, in to the now famous Legends Match.
The first Legends Match was played at the Stoop in 2010 on the eve of the 6 Nations match and the cup they still play for is the Stuart Mangan Memorial Trophy.
Last year HFRFC Vets took 40 players over to Dublin and played in an inaugural “Curtain Raiser” match, against Bective RFC, in which they raised over £46,000 for the Legends Charities.
On the 21st February this year, the Legends match is to be played at Harlequins ground in London and Hammersmith & Fulham RFC Vets and London Irish Vets have been honoured, to be asked to play the curtain raiser .
The aim of the match is to raise as much money as possible in Stuart’s memory, for RFU Injured Players and the IRFU Charitable Trust, that both do so much good work in looking after over 150 seriously injured players.
Over 30 HFRFC Vets players will be taking to the field in London and putting their bodies on the line against very strong opposition. We our hoping to raise over £20,000 for the rugby charities, but with your help we hope it will be much, much more.
Please dig deep to support these great charities and if you are in London on the 21 Feb please come and watch, it will be a great craic and a brilliant evening! Tickets can be bought through Ticketmaster or Quins at http://www.englandirelandlegends.com/#!tickets/c1yws
