Lewy body dementia is the second most common cause of age-related dementia, affecting around 130,000 people in the UK. We raise awareness of the disease, provide information to patients and carers, and fund research so that in future it can be more easily diagnosed and treated.

Story

In June I will be cycling over 980 miles in 9 days from John O’Groats in the far North of Scotland to Land’s End in Cornwall along with 500+ other lycra clad idiots.

Although the views will be wonderful it is a huge test of stamina as we will be averaging 109 miles per day and climbing over 51,000 feet along the way, which is almost twice the height of Mount Everest. If that wasn’t enough I will be camping in a tent every night...

If you want to find out more then you can follow the event at www.rideacrossbritain.com from June 8th to the 16th this summer and follow my progress on twitter (@chrismadelin) or Facebook.

In 2007 my Grandad, Michael Madelin, passed away. In the years leading up to his death my Grandad had Lewy Body Disease. Lewy Body Disease is the second most frequent cause of age-related neurodegenerative dementia. At least 5 percent of people aged 85 and older are thought to suffer from this little known but not uncommon and devastating disease.

DLB shares mental symptoms, such as confusion and loss of memory, with Alzheimer's disease and motor symptoms, such as gait and slow movement, with Parkinson's disease. For that reason it is often misdiagnosed. Accurate diagnosis is essential for successful treatment of the disease: people with DLB are characteristically highly sensitive to certain drugs which can worsen unpleasant symptoms or even be fatal.
