Story
We have now completed our bike ride please read about our adventure: www.theseatpost.co.uk
On the 30th May 2010 I flew out with my brother, Alan, to Portland Oregan. Alan retired as a detective Inspector in September 2009, he is a member of the international Police Association (IPA) who have been working in the states to aid us at the start and finish and with some stops along the route. I would like to emphasise this is a fully unsupported ride - we are carrying everything with us.
The ride started on the 1st June in Astoria. We aim to arrive in Yorktown Virginia on the 30th July having covered 4260 miles (if we don't get lost). We will be averaging 85 miles a day for 52 days having a rest day on every 7th day.
The route takes us initially across the rocky mountains rising to 11 500 feet (cold!) as we come out of the Rocky's we will pass through Yellowstone National Park (watch out for Bears!). We will also be passing though the town of Lamont which an oasis in the desolate Great Divide Basin then the alpine type terrain of Kremmling, Colarado. Then a long climb to cross the continental divide at Hoosier pass which is 11 542 feet. From Colorado we go into Kansas (hot barren country) carrying extra water. Onwards into the flat Great Plains then over the Mississippi river into Carbondale. Then Kentucky and onto the Appalachian Mountains, then Virginia (including the Blue Ridge Mountains), Yorktown is then in relative sight!
