Story

We are Adriana and Donato, two Venezuelans who felt in love with Cambridge ever since we arrived 15 years ago. This is our third year running the Cambridge Half Marathon and we would like to dedicate
this race to the people who struggle to access health care in Venezuela as well as doctors, nurses and voluntaries who work hard helping despite the lack of resources.

There is an unparalleled humanitarian emergency in Venezuela, one that has been recognised by multiple international organisations. The country is suffering from an 85 per cent shortage of both food and medicines and diseases such as diphtheria and malaria are re-emerging, indicating that the entire healthcare system is on the verge of collapse. Hospitals report a lack of electricity, and more than 13,000 doctors have left Venezuela in the past four years in search of better opportunities. People cannot afford medication and its shortage has forced many to seek medicine on the black market.

Healing Venezuela is charity that started in 2014 and have been making a tremendous effort to help with the crisis in our home country. We have been personally involved with this charity organising fundraising events in different occasions here in Cambridge, so this organisation is very close to our heart as well as the work they do, entirely run by volunteers, some of their projects include:

  • Shipping medical supplies that are distributed to a network of health centres.
  • Supporting the pregnancy planning and awareness programme shipping more than 800 t-coils, 1,500 pregnancy, syphilis and HIV quick tests.
  • Supporting a stress management program in schools and hospitals.
  • Sponsoring health care programs in remote areas of the country.
  • Sponsoring junior doctors with $15 per month, to help them to pay their living expenses to encourage these young professionals to continue with their careers in four different universities in Venezuela.
  • Purchasing and repairing equipment in hospitals as well as installing water treatment plants.
  • Sponsor high-spec tests for low-income patients with very serious conditions such as cancer, diabetes, HIV and organ transplants.
